Ledbury Railway Station 1988

Ledbury Railway Station

Situated to the east of Hereford and west of the Malvern Hills, Ledbury is a market town which dates back to the 8th century and is featured in the Domesday Book.

One of Ledbury’s most outstanding and famous buildings is Ledbury Market Hall, built in 1617, located in the town centre. Other notable buildings include the parish church of St. Michael and All Angels, the Painted Room (home to sixteenth-century frescoes), the Old Grammar School, the Barrett-Browning memorial clock tower which opened in 1896 and housed the library until 2015), nearby Eastnor Castle and St. Katherine's Hospital and Almshouses.

Not only is the architecture of great historic interest, but Ledbury was the site of four battles fought during the English Civil War, and also has literary connections of considerable note, as home to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, birthplace of Poet Laureate, John Masefield, the subject of William Wordsworth’s 1835 sonnet, St Catherine of Ledbury and is associated with the Dymock Poets (Lascelles Abercrombie, Rupert Brooke, John Drinkwater, Robert Frost, Wilfrid Gibson and Edward Thomas).

Popular with tourists and walkers and renowned for its numerous festivals each year, Ledbury is a good base from which to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside. Ledbury railway station is near the western end of the Cotswold line and offers direct services to Hereford, Worcester, Birmingham, Oxford and London Paddington. Originally built by the West Midland Railway in 1861, Ledbury Station was called Ledbury Junction from 1885 to 1959. The Ledbury Tunnel is 1,323 yards long and the magnificent Ledbury Viaduct is 372 yards long with 30 round-headed arches.

In 2021, funded by a grant from West Midlands Railway, and with the support of Ledbury Town Council and Ledbury Civic Trust, the Rail & Bus for Herefordshire group launched the ‘Your Community, Your Fund’ scheme. This community project was designed to bring the station and town together to promote Ledbury as a jewel of a heritage town on the West Midlands Railway network. Encouraging people to travel by train will assist in reducing traffic in the town centre and maintaining Ledbury’s attractive heritage.
